"Bones" and "SEAL Team" star David Boreanaz is set to star in the iconic role of Jim Rockford in NBC's upcoming reboot pilot of "The Rockford Files", which was picked up at the broadcaster in January. The character is described as a witty, world-weary and chronically broke private investigator whose charmingly gruff exterior masked a strong moral core. Rockford was originally played by James Garner across six seasons (1974-1980) and six made-for-TV movies on CBS. The original show won five Emmy awards including Outstanding Drama Series and Lead Actor in a Drama Series (Garner).
Here is the official synopsis: "Newly paroled after doing time for a crime he didn't commit, James Rockford returns to his life as a private investigator using his charm and wit to solve cases around Los Angeles. It doesn't take long for his quest for legitimacy to land him squarely in the crosshairs of both local police and organized crime".
The "Rockford Files" pilot hails from writer and executive producer Mike Daniels, and is executive produced by Carl Beverly, Sarah Timberman, and Chris Leanza. Boreanaz will serve as producer in addition to starring. Universal Television is the studio.
Previous attempts to reboot "The Rockford Files" include a failed 2009 NBC pilot starring Dermot Mulroney that was produced by Steve Carrell, and a Universal Pictures feature film version starring Vince Vaughn. Neither came to fruition.
