"Ride Along 2" and "The Revenant" lead the charts while "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" finally took a step back. Still, Disney's behemoth managed to cross $1 billion internationally. Also, Michael Bay sort of flopped.
Find out more about the weekend box office after the jump.
"Ride Along 2" dominated the box-office, but still couldn't top its predecessor with $34 million, compared to the first film's $41.5 million opening weekend in the same timeframe in 2014. The sequel's domestic total over the four-day Martin Luther King weekend is estimated at $39.5 million.
Meanwhile, "The Revenant" is holding strong following the announcement that the film is nominated for twelve Academy Awards. In its second weekend, the Leonardo DiCaprio starrer only dropped 25.9% and scored $29.5 million for a total of $93 million. To that it adds $58.6 million from overseas markets. Not bad for an Oscar hopeful.
"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" fell to #3 with $25 million added to a record-breaking $856 million domestic total. Overseas, the film is seeing a somewhat slower growth, despite surpassing the $1 billion milestone. The film is now very close to overtaking the international gross of "Jurassic World" and "Furious 7", but is still a long way from beating James Cameron's "Avatar".
In fourth place we have a surprising disappointment from Michael Bay. His Benghazi action drama "13 Hours" only brought in $16 million during the weekend and $19 million for the extended four-day timeframe. This is Bay's worst opening weekend since "The Island" in 2005 ($12 million).
The third wide release of the weekend was the animated feature "Norm of the North" which was initially supposed to have a straight-to-dvd release. As it is, the film grossed $6.6 million for the weekend and $8.8 in four days, which is better than most expected.
New Wide Releases: "Ride Along 2", "13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi", "Norm of the North".
Biggest Drop : "The Forest" (-54%)
Smallest Drop : "The Big Short" (-16%)
