As predicted, "Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation" is off to a great start, but the comedy reboot "Vacation" failed to live up to its hype.
Find out more about the weekend box office after the jump.
The fifth installment in Tom Cruise's super-spy franchise, "Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation" , opened in theaters over the weekend with an impressive $56 million 3-day gross. This is the second-best debut for a M:I movie, behind "Mission: Impossible II" which opened with $57 million in 2000, which adjusted for inflation would actually add up to more. With inflation taken into account, the highest grossing installment is actually the first one with $180 in 1996 which adjusts to $332 million today, followed by Part II with $324 million by today's inflation standards. The fourth film in the franchise, Ghost Protocol grossed $215 million in 2011 and opened with 29.5 million. Rogue Nation will probably surpass Protocol but it remains to be seen if it can match the domestic gross of the first two films.
Meanwhile, the much-hyped comedy reboot/sequel "Vacation" failed to even match initial estimates. The film opened on July 29th and grossed $21.1 million in five days and $14.8 million over the weekend. Original estimates pointed towards a $30 million for the weekend alone. Terrible reviews and the fact that reboots have a bad reputation these days probably contributed to the film's poor results.
New Wide Releases: "Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation", "Vacation".
Biggest Drop : "Paper Towns" (-63%)
Smallest Drop : "Inside Out" (-39%)
