Colin Trevvorow's "Jurassic World" not only brought the franchise back to life, but it launched it ahead of other more recent and popular cinematic enterprises. The new dino thriller opened with $204.6 million in the U.S., a sum that even went beyond the $100 million that Universal was initially hoping for. This result ranks second as the biggest opening weekend ever, behind "The Avengers" ($207 million) and ahead of "Avengers: Age of Ultron" ($191 million). It's also the biggest opening weekend for both Chris Pratt and Universal. Pratt's other successful franchise film, "Guardians of the Galaxy" opened with $94 million last year. For Universal, this is their second franchise to take off in a major way this year. The first was "Furious 7" which opened with $147 million and has now grossed $1.5 billion worldwide. "Jurassic World" grossed an additional $150 million from overseas markets.
With such a loud debut, all the other movies in the top 10 faded a bit. The Melissa McCarthy comedy "Spy" dropped 45% to No. 2 and grossed $16 million this weekend bringing its cume to $56 million. The disaster flick "San Andreas" dropped to No. 3 and took in $11 million, which brings the domestic total to $119 million. The horror sequel "Insidious: Chapter 3" dropped a steep 67% and landed in fourth place with $7.3 million and a total of $37 million.
