The Paul Feig - Melissa McCarthy team has scored another big hit with the action comedy "Spy" which secured a top spot opening while fellow wide releases "Insidious: Chapter 3" and "Entourage" fought hard but fell short.
Find out more about the weekend box office after the jump.
The Melissa McCarthy starrer "Spy" opened this weekend with a strong $30 million domestically, and an additional $56.5 million from overseas markets. The $65 million film was met with enthusiastic reactions from both critics and moviegoers and looks to aim high in the following weeks. "Spy" ranks third as the actress' biggest opening weekend, behind "The Heat" ($39 million) and "Identity Thief" ($34 million).
While the disaster movie "San Andreas" dropped 51% from the previous week, it managed to hold on to second place with a Friday through Sunday gross of $26 million which brings its domestic total to $92 million.
In third place we have the horror film "Insidious: Chapter 3". Marking the directorial debut of screenwriter Leigh Whannell, the film ended up with $23 million over the weekend, despite seeming to have an edge over "Spy" on Friday. The new installment ranks second in the franchise, ahead of the original "Insidious" which opened with $13 million, but below "Insidious: Chapter 2" which scored a $40 million debut. Still, with an additional $14 million grossed from international markets and a production budget of just $10 million, the film is already making a huge profit.
The HBO TV series sequel "Entourage" ranked fourth with a weak $10 million. Given that a movie of this sort requires at the very least a basic familiarity with the original show and characters, it's not a big shock that it couldn't find a bigger audience. The film was released on June 3rd, and it's 5-day total has now reached $17.8 million versus a $30 million budget.
Rounding up the top 5 is the reboot "Mad Max: Fury Road" which continues to do well. The film has now surpassed the $300 million milestone worldwide and has ranked fifth in the domestic top 10 with a $7.9 million weekend.
New Wide Releases: "Spy", "Insidious: Chapter 3", "Entourage".
Biggest Drop : "Aloha" (-65%)
Smallest Drop : "Mad Mad: Fury Road" (-43%)
