Jennifer Lawrence has joined the cast of the drama "Burial Rites". The film is based on the novel of the same name written by Hannah Kent and will be directed by Luca Guadagnino. Guadagnino is currently enjoying a lot of awards buzz for his highly acclaimed romantic drama "Call Me by Your Name".
Lawrence will star as Agnes Magnusdottir, the last woman to be publicly executed in Iceland in 1830 for killing two men and setting fire to their home. The story follows Agnes during the last months of her life, as she awaits confirmation of her death sentence by the high court, forging emotional and romantic bonds while reflecting on her supposed crimes.
The film will be produced by Allison Shearmur ("Rogue One: A Star Wars Story"), Justine Ciarrocchi and Lawrence, and executive-produced by Gary Ross ("The Hunger Games") and Jerry Kalajian. Shearmur had the following to say about the film in a statement:

"Luca Guadagnino is a masterful storyteller who brilliantly captures the nuance of the human condition in his films. I cannot wait for him to bring his original voice to the raw, visceral brutality, and poetry of Hannah Kent’s haunting true story of Agnes Magnúsdóttir, the last woman to be publicly executed in Iceland for the murder of two men. Jennifer Lawrence, Justine Ciarrocchi, and I love this project and we could not be more excited by the way it is coming together with Hannah Minghella’s passion and drive to get it done at TriStar."
