Tom Hardy to Star as Venom in R-Rated Spider-Man Spin-off

Tom Hardy (Mad Max: Fury Road", "The Dark Knight Rises") is ready to board another big-screen comic book franchise. The actor has been chosen to star as Eddie Brock aka the villain Venom in the upcoming "Spider-Man" spin-off from Sony. Ruben Fleischer ("Zombieland", "Gangster Squad") has been hired to direct from a script by Dante Harper ("Alien: Covenant"). Production is expected to start this fall and the release date is set for October 5, 2018.

Sony intends to start their own shared cinematic universe similar to the MCU and whatever the DCEU is trying to be. Sony partnered up with Marvel for "Spider-Man: Homecoming" after their first reboot attempts went bust, but "Venom" will be a solo effort on the studio's part and will not be connected to the MCU. Furthermore, they are developing it as an R-rated film. "Spider-Man: Homecoming" opens in theaters on July 7th.
