"Mother!" is a psychological horror film written and directed by Darren Aronofsky ("Black Swan"). The film's plot would generally be described as following a couple, played by Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem, whose relationship is strained by the arrival of uninvited guests at their home, followed by events that disrupt their tranquil existence.

The narrative, however, should actually be interpreted as an allegory. Aronofsky describes the film as using a "a dream-logic narrative" and that it's a "psychological freak-out" that shouldn't be over-explained. This has led to some controversy as audiences were left confused, especially since the film's marketing has been misleading.

All this resulted in a rare CinemaScore "F" grade from moviegoers and a weak $7.5 million debut. Critics were also somewhat divided on the film's merits. Some praised the director's thought-provoking vision and artistic integrity, while others considered it too outlandish and pretentious.

Paramount chose to release a public statement defending the film: "This movie is very audacious and brave. You are talking about a director at the top of his game, and an actress at the top her game. They made a movie that was intended to be bold. Everyone wants original filmmaking, and everyone celebrates Netflix when they tell a story no one else wants to tell. This is our version. We don’t want all movies to be safe. And it’s okay if some people don’t like it."

The film also stars Michelle Pfeiffer, Ed Harris, Domhnall Gleeson, Brian Gleeson, Kristen Wiig, Jovan Adepo and Stephen McHattie.

"Mother!" opened in theaters on September 15th, 2017.
