The film stars Kit Harington as the titular character, a television actor whose correspondence with an 11-year-old fan and child-actor from England is publicly exposed by a gossip columnist (Jessica Chastain) in the early 2000s, and his life and career are destroyed due to ill founded assumptions. The young actor recollects his relationship with his past idol ten years later in an interview.
The film also stars Susan Sarandon as Donovan's mother and Kathy Bates as his manager. There are no other details regarding who Portman and Hoult will play, although the latter could possibly play the older version of the 11-year-old boy. The cast also includes Thandie Newton, Michael Gambon, Bella Thorne, Chris Zylka and Emily Hampshire. There is no official release date, but it's expected to open in theaters this year.
"The Death and Life of John F. Donovan" is Dolan's english-language debut, but the critically acclaimed filmmaker already has a solid track record. Apart from directing Adele's hit video "Hello", he's also made five other feature films that have earned him five nominations and six awards at the Cannes Film Festival, including the Jury Prize with "Mommy" (which also earned him a Palme d'Or nod), the Queer Palm with "Laurence Anyways" and Regards Jeunes Prize with "Les amours imaginaires" and "J'ai tué ma mère". Dolan's next film will be the drama "It's Only the End of the World" starring Léa Seydoux, Marion Cotillard and Vincent Cassel.
