Elizabeth Banks has joined the upcoming "Power Rangers" movie produced by Lionsgate. The adaptation of the 1990s kids TV show will be directed by Dean Israelite ("Project Almanac") and the cast already includes relative newcomers RJ Cyler, Becky Gomez, Ludi Lin, Naomi Scott and Dacre Montgomery as the titular heroes, teenagers infused with powers who must protect our world from malevolent alien forces.
Banks is set to play the film's villain, the evil Rita Repulsa, an alien witch who aims to conquer the planet. The actress is no stranger to extravagant makeup and costumes as she's already starred in "The Hunger Games" franchise as Effie Trinket.
The screenplay is penned by "The Last Witch Hunter" scribes Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama and the film is produced by Haim Saban, Brian Casentini, Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey with Allison Shearmur serving as executive producer.
"Power Rangers" opens in theaters on March 24, 2017.
