In a surprising move at the box-office, last week's No 2 became this week's No. 1. The animated adventure "Mr. Peabody & Sherman" climbed to the top spot, earning $21 million over the weekend and outgrossing three action-packed extravaganzas: "Need For Speed", "300: Rise of An Empire" and "Non-Stop". The videogame adaptation "Need for Speed" starring Aaron Paul ("Breaking Bad") came in third in its opening weekend, grossing $17 million. The film is a bit of a disappointment for Dreamworks domestically, but overseas it grossed $45 million, which should at least salvage some of the film's costs.
In other news, the Tyler Perry movie "The Single Moms Club" tanked with an $8 million opening and it marks the lowest debut ever for a film directed by Perry. Wes Anderson's "The Grand Budapest Hotel" entered the top 10 after expanding from its initial limited release and has grossed $3.6 million in the last three days.
This week's other wide release, the TV show adaptation/extension "Veronica Mars" starring Kristen Bell opened with $2 million grossed from 291 theaters, which is not bad at all for the Kickstarter-funded movie.
More box-office details and the complete top 10, after the jump.
