In Theaters, June 10, 2011 : SUPER 8

Official Synopsis : In the summer of 1979, a group of friends in a small Ohio town witness a catastrophic train crash while making a super 8 movie and soon suspect that it was not an accident. Shortly after, unusual disappearances and inexplicable events begin to take place in town, and the local Deputy tries to uncover the truth – something more terrifying than any of them could have imagined.

What to Expect : A big budget throwback to Steven Spielberg's classics. Hands up anyone who watched the trailers and immediately thought of "E.T.". This is the perfect summer movie, light and simple, yet full of thrilling mysteries and cool visual effects, plus a heavy dose of childhood nostalgia. Perfect !

Critical Response : Very, very enthusiastic reception from critics. Claudia Puig from USA Today argued that "This sci-fi thriller has an engrossing plot and a strong cast of fully drawn characters...it's a summer blockbuster firing on all cylinders". Mick LaSalle of the San Francisco Chronicle called it a " sci-fi monster movie that keeps its sense of fun and humanity. It's a valentine to a classically American genre -- the B-movie -- and a nostalgic look back on a more innocent time.". One of the major complaints, though, was related to a rather poor third act, as Steven D. Greydanus of the Decent Films Guide remarked : "Works so well for an hour or so that it's disappointing to watch it unravel in the third act and then fall apart completely at the climax. In retrospect, it's a mess." Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times had a similar complaint, despite having loved the movie as a whole : "During the first hour of "Super 8," I was elated by how good it was. It was like seeing a lost early Spielberg classic. Then something started to slip...The presentation of the threat was done with obscure and unconvincing special effects.". "Super 8" is currently 82% fresh on Rottentomatoes.com, with 117 positive reviews and 25 negative ones.
