"Waiting for the Barbarians" is a a drama directed by Ciro Guerra ("Embrace of the Serpent", "Birds of Passage") from a script by J.M. Coetzee based on his own novel of the same name.

Mark Rylance stars as a Magistrate working in a distant outpost on the border of an unnamed empire, who begins to question his loyalty to the empire. Johnny Depp, Robert Pattinson, Gana Bayarsaikhan, Greta Scacchi and Sam Reid co-star.

"Waiting for the Barbarians" premiered at the Venice Film Festival on September 6, 2019, where it was nominated for the Golden Lion (Best Film). It was released via streaming on August 7, 2020.
