The submarine disaster drama "Kursk", also known as "The Command" in the U.S., is based on the true story of the Kursk submarine tragedy that happened in 2000, at the beginning of Putin's first presidential term. The film is directed by Thomas Vinterberg ("The Hunt") from a script by Robert Rodat ("Saving Private Ryan") based on Robert Moore's non-fiction book "A Time to Die". The cast includes Matthias Schoenaerts, Colin Firth, Léa Seydoux, Peter Simonischek, Max von Sydow, Matthias Schweighöfer and Michael Nyqvist.

"Kursk" ("The Command") opened on November 7, 2018 in France and on June 21, 2019 in select theaters in the U.S.

" Based on the story of the 2000 Kursk submarine disaster, Kursk follows the final hours of an "unsinkable" Russian nuclear submarine as it sinks to the bottom of the Barents Sea. Some of the crew survives the initial explosion, including officer Mikhail Kalekov (Matthias Schoenaerts), whose pregnant wife (Lea Seydoux) and child are waiting back home. Unfortunately, their rescue is complicated by bureaucracy between Russia, France, Norway and Britain, with British navy chief David Russell (Colin Firth) attempting to convince Russian officials to accept foreign aid.
