The third season of the highly acclaimed anthology crime drama series "True Detective" has premiered on January 13, 2019 on HBO, and received mostly positive reviews from critics.

The new season marks creator Nic Pizzolatto's directorial debut on the fourth and fifth episodes. The first two episodes were directed by Jeremy Saulnier ("Green Room"), and after he departed due to creative differences, he was replaced for the remaining episodes by TV helmer Daniel Sackheim. Pizzolatto wrote the entire season except for episode three, co-written by David Milch ("NYPD Blue"), and episode six, co-written by Graham Gordy ("Quarry").

Season 3 follows the story the story of a macabre crime in the heart of the Ozarks, and a mystery that deepens over decades and plays out in three separate time periods. Oscar winner Mahershala Ali and Stephen Dorff star as the new season's leads, and the cast also includes Carmen Ejogo, Ray Fisher, Jodi Balfour, Scoot McNairy and Mamie Gummer.
