"Mary Queen of Scots" is a historical drama directed by British theater director Josie Rourke in her feature film directorial debut, from a script written by Beau Willimon ("House of Cards") based on John Guy's biography "Queen of Scots: The True Life of Mary Stuart".

The film explores the turbulent life of the charismatic Mary Stuart (Saoirse Ronan), whose attempt to overthrow her cousin Elizabeth I (Margot Robbie), Queen of England, finds her condemned to years of imprisonment before facing execution. Jack Lowden, Joe Alwyn, David Tennant, Gemma Chan, Ismael Cruz Córdova and Guy Pearce co-star.

"Mary Queen of Scots" premiered at this year's AFI Fest and is set to open in select theaters in the U.S. on December 7, 2018 and in the U.K. on January 18, 2019. The film has received mostly positive reviews from critics.

""Mary Queen of Scots" explores the turbulent life of the charismatic Mary Stuart (Ronan). Queen of France at 16 and widowed at 18, Mary defies pressure to remarry. Instead, she returns to her native Scotland to reclaim her rightful throne. But Scotland and England fall under the rule of the compelling Elizabeth I (Robbie). Each young Queen beholds her "sister" in fear and fascination. Rivals in power and in love, and female regents in a masculine world, the two must decide how to play the game of marriage versus independence. Determined to rule as much more than a figurehead, Mary asserts her claim to the English throne, threatening Elizabeth's sovereignty. Betrayal, rebellion, and conspiracies within each court imperil both thrones - and change the course of history."
