Weekend Box-Office: JUNGLE BOOK Scores Massive $103M Debut

It will come as no surprise that Disney's "The Jungle Book" is this week's box-office champion, but even the most optimist of pundits couldn't have expected it would do so well. The comedy sequel "Barbershop: The Next Cut" did okay, but the third new release, the Kevin Costner thriller "Criminal" suffered a bit of a disappointment.

Find out more about the weekend box office after the jump.

"The Jungle Book" opened with $103.5 million, making it the third film to open with more than $100 million this year, so far, and the second largest April opening weekend of all-time behind "Furious 7". It's also the studio's second best debut behind 2010's "Alice in Wonderland" which opened with $116 million. The remake also grossed an impressive $187 million overseas of which $50.3 million came from China, and there are still a few more countries left to open in.

In (a very distant) second place, "Barbershop: The Next Cut" grossed $20.2 million, which is somewhat less than what the studio was expecting. However, considering that this is a sequel to a series of films released in 2002 and 2004, it's really not that bad. It actually matches the opening weekend of the original film which was $20.6 million, while "Barbershop 2" opened with $24.2 million two years later. Combined with the fact that this third installment has received very positive reactions from critics and moviegoers, I would say the film is doing okay.

The news isn't so good for the Kevin Costner starrer "Criminal". The film landed outside the Top 5 with a $5.85 million debut versus a $31.5 million budget. Add to that the negative critical reception and the lukewarm reactions from moviegoers, and I get the feeling that this movie will have a hard time reaching $15 million.

Melissa McCarthy's "The Boss" took a steep 56.9% drop in its second weekend, the largest ever for the comedian. Now in third place after last week's #1 debut,  the film has reached $40 million. Considering that it only cost $29 million to produce, those are still some pretty good numbers.

In fourth place, "Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice" faced a 61.4% drop from last week. The superhero flick grossed $9 million over the weekend and has reached a domestic total of $311.3 million to which it adds $516 million from overseas markets.
