20th Century Fox's "Fantastic Four" reboot took a massive hit in its opening weekend while the latest installment in Tom Cruise's action franchise, "Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation" is still in the lead.

The latest superhero movie to hit theaters, the "Fantastic Four" reboot turned out to be a huge disappointment, not only for the critics (9% score on Rottentomatoes.com), but also for moviegoers. The film grossed $26.2 million versus a $120 million budget and almost became the worst opening for a Marvel comics based movie ever. The only movie in this particular category that grossed less in its opening weekend was "Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance" with $22.1 million in 2012.
Meanwhile, "Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation" is proving to be quite resilient in its second week. The sequel dropped 47% from its debut and grossed $29.4 million which brings it across the $100 million mark.
The biggest surprise came from the mystery thriller "The Gift" , written, directed by and starring Joel Edgerton. The film opened in third place with a solid $12 million from only 1,648 locations, and it only cost $5 million to produce. I should also mention that it's produced by Blumhouse Productions.
The dramedy "Ricki and the Flash" starring Meryl Streep and her real-life daughter Mamie Gummer, placed seventh with $6.5 million.
The animated feature "Shaun the Sheep" also flopped with a $4 million debut that puts it outside the top 10. This is the worst opening for an Aardman film, even worse than the $11 million grossed by "The Pirates! Band of Misfits".
