Terminator: Genisys begins by treading the territory of James Cameron’s original The Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgment Day, with adult John Connor (Jason Clarke) sending trusted military confidant Kyle Reese (Jai Courtney) back in time to battle a Terminator that has also been sent back in time with the purpose of killing Sarah Connor (Emilia Clarke) and, therefore, preventing John from ever being born. But when Courtney’s Reese lands in the year 1984, things are very different, as Sarah is already fully aware of the Terminator threat and is much more the hardened warrior of T2 rather than the (justifiably) confused civilian from The Terminator.
