The critically acclaimed sequel "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" scored an impressive debut this weekend and became the No. 1 movie at the box-office with $73 million, an improvement over the $54.8 million opening weekend of "Rise of the Planet of the Apes". While the summer box-office is still struggling compared to last year, it doesn't diminish the success of Matt Reeves' film which managed to be a hit both with critics (91% on Rottentomatoes) and audiences (8.6 on IMdB) alike. Dawn also grossed an additional $31 million internationally.
