Academy Award winner Natalie Portman has signed on to direct and star in an untitled biopic about the identical twin sisters who wrote advice columns as Abigail Van Buren and Ann Landers.

Born in 1918, Esther Pauline and Pauline Esther Friedman grew up incredibly close in Sioux City, Iowa. The former won a contest in 1955 to take over the "Ask Ann Landers" advice column in the Chicago Sun-Times, while her sister launched the Dear Abby column in the San Francisco Chronicle in 1956. The competing columns led to the sisters having a bitter and complicated professional rivalry that would last for most of their lives.

Portman will play both sisters. Katie Robbins, producer and writer on the Showtime series "The Affair", penned the script. The film will be produced by Peter Saraf ("Little Miss Sunshine") and Dani Melia.

This is Portman's second directorial project following the 2015 Israeli drama "A Tale of Love and Darkness". She can also be seen in the music drama "Vox Lux" alongside Jude Law, which will premiere at the Venice Film Festival, and Xavier Dolan's "The Death and Life of John F. Donovan".
