"Altered Carbon" is a new Netflix sci-fi series based on Richard K. Morgan's 2002 novel of the same name. The story is set in the year 2384 and imagines a world in which the human consciousness can be stored digitally. Joel Kinnaman stars as a mercenary who awakes in a new body and is released from prison after serving a 500-year sentence. But his freedom has a price as he is tasked with solving a mysterious murder in a world where death has become a rarity.

The cast also includes Martha Higareda, Will Yun Lee, Dichen Lachman, Kristin Lehman, Ato Essandoh, Matt Frewer, Chris Conner and James Purefoy. The first episode is directed by Miguel Sapochnik ("Game of Thrones"). "Shutter Island" writer Laeta Kalogridis serves as showrunner and penned the opening episode's script.

The complete ten-episode first season of "Altered Carbon" premiered via Netflix on February 2, 2018. The series received mixed reviews from critics.
