James Gunn has announced via Twitter that the first draft of his script for "Guardians of the Galaxy 2" has been finished. Gunn also said the following:
"After 48 days straight without a day off, the first draft of #GotG2 is done. I'm sorry to all my friends and family who I have ignored.""Guardians of the Galaxy 2" begins shooting in February 2016 and is scheduled for release in May 2017. Until then, Gunn is currently working on his next film, "The Belko Experiment" which he is directing, writing and producing.
The Marvel sequel will dig deeper into the lives of its protagonists and will reveal the identity of Peter Quill's (Chris Pratt) father. According to Gunn, "Star-Lord’s dad is likely from the comics… I mean he is from the comics. Sort of." Since Gunn has a lot more creative freedom with this part of the Marvel franchise, it's expected that his vision will deviate from the comics, as was confirmed by Gunn himself:
"It’s not really based on anything. The story for Guardians 2 is an original story that I came up with that I started working on actually while I was shooting Guardians 1, and it’ll answer some of the questions that were put forth in the first movie about Peter Quill’s father and who he is and what’s going on with that. We’ll get to know some of the characters a little bit more and then we’re going to meet a couple of new characters who will be very important to Guardians movies and probably important to the Marvel Universe as a whole."
