Considering that "The Purge: Anarchy" surpassed the success of the first film, earning $108 million worldwide, it comes as no surprise that Universal, Blumhouse and Platinum Dunes have begun development on the third film in the franchise which will be written once again by James DeMonaco who will also probably direct it, although that piece of information is not completely certain. The story of that one night of the year in which all crimes are legal and people are allowed to play out their twisted fantasies to their heart's desire has proven to be more successful than even its creator could have imagined. In a statement for Deadline, Demonaco spoke about The Purge phenomenon and the third installment:
"I never imagined that The Purge would become the phenomenon it has become and I am thrilled to continue my collaboration with Blumhouse, Sebastien Lemercier, Platinum Dunes and the great team at Universal in building The Purge into a worldwide franchise."Universal and Blumhouse have extended their partnership for the next decade, and the new "The Purge" sequel is expected to be released next year, which means that we have another one of those regular yearly films, like "Paranormal Activity" and "Saw"
