Apparently, unexpected things can still happen at the box-office. On July 29, "Cowboys & Aliens", "The Smurfs" and "Crazy, Stupid, Love" opened and competed for the top spot, but, the results have been more than surprising, at least for two of them. Read the full article to find out what's new at the box-office.

This year we've had a lot of buzz surrounding Ridley Scott's new movie, "Prometheus". At first, everyone thought this was a prequel for the "Alien" franchise, but after letting the media mince the concept for a while, the filmmakers disclosed that this is not a prequel to "Alien", but a stand-alone sci-fi epic and that fans will recognize a strand of "Alien" DNA. These last two words became a sort of riddle for all to guess. What did they mean ? Is it a prequel or not ? The mystery lingered on for a couple of months, but recently the veil has been lifted and we're starting to get a good idea about what the project is really about. Read the full article to get the complete scoop on "Prometheus".

"The Dark Knight Rises" has moved back to Pittsburgh and resumed filming, and that's where JustJared.com managed to take some pictures of Tom Hardy in full-gear as Bane, one of Batman's most dreaded villains, as well as Batman's new Tumbler, which is basically the old one with military camouflage. In the pictures, Bane is standing on top of the Tumbler, which has sparked a great deal of speculation on the Internet about what this means in terms of plot. As usual, I will refrain from any such speculations, but I will say that Bane looks like a cyborg from some kind of post-apocalyptic scenario.

It's really too soon to say if he looks ridiculous, or not, because we'll have to see him in action before passing judgement, but I'm sure Hardy is capable of crafting a menacing character, so the costume really is a secondary thing here. There's also a video of the crew allowing a bride and groom to take a closer look at the Tumbler, which is pretty cool.

G.I. JOE: RETALIATION, formerly known as "Cobra Strikes", the sequel to the 2009 action blockbuster based on the G.I. Joy toy franchise, is set to open on June 29, 2012, a date which was initially prepared for another one of Paramount Picture's big projects, "Star Trek 2". But, since that movie is still in pre-production (script still being written), it was time to make room for a movie that can actually make the summer deadline. It is unknown at this time whether or not "Star Trek 2" will be released in 2012, or 2013. We'll have to wait and see. "G.I. Joe: Retaliation"  stars Channing Tatum, Dwayne Johnson, Ray Stevenson, Adrianne Palicki, Jonathan Pryce, Arnold Vosloo and RZA, and is directed by Jon M. Chu ("Justin Bieber: Never Say Never", "Step Up 3D").

MAN OF STEEL, Zack Snyder's reboot of the Superman franchise has been removed from its December 2012 release date and scheduled for June 13, 2013. This move allows the movie a little more breathing room, since 2012 is pretty much packed with all kinds of major releases. The super-hero epic stars Henry Cavill as Superman/Clark Kent, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Kevin Costner and Diane Lane as Clark's adoptive parents, Michael Shannon as General Zod, Julia Ormond and Russel Crowe as Jor-El. With a dream cast like this, what could possibly go wrong ? Well, with a budget of $175M, let's hope not a lot.

ONE SHOT and MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE - GHOST PROTOCOL, two Tom Cruise starrers have also received release date updates. The military thriller "One Shot" has received its first one, February 8, 2011, while "M:I 4" has changed its original December 16 date to December 21, 2011, which means it will open opposite of David Fincher's remake of "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo". As for "One Shot", its February release date puts it at safe distance from any other big projects from rival studios. Both movies are produced by Paramount Pictures. "One Shot" is written and directed by Christopher McQuarrie, who co-wrote both "M:I 4" and another Tom Cruise vehicle, "Valkyrie", while the fourth "Mission: Impossible" sequel is directed by Brad Bird who is responsible for some of Pixar's biggest hits, like "Ratatouille" and "The Incredibles".

Thursday, July 28, 2011

A while ago it was rumored that Arnold Schwarzenegger will make his big screen comeback with a movie called "Cry Macho", directed by Brad Furman ("The Lincoln Lawyer"), a very age-appropriate thriller for the former California Governator. Things however turned sour with his recent divorce scandal, so the deal fell through. But that isn't enough to stop the 64-year old actor. So, prepare for "The Last Stand", a movie from cult korean filmmaker Jee-Woon Kim ("I Saw the Devil", "The Good, the Bad, the Weird"). The movie will be the director's first english-language movie and is said to be a very violent modern day western. The script is being penned by Jeffrey Nachmanoff ("Traitor", "The Day After Tomorrow") and Andrew Knauer. Here's the movie's official synopsis :
"Schwarzenegger will be starring as Sheriff Owens, a man who has resigned himself to a life of fighting what little crime takes place in sleepy border town Sommerton Junction after leaving his LAPD post following a bungled operation that left him wracked with failure and defeat after his partner was crippled. After a spectacular escape from an FBI prisoner convoy, the most notorious, wanted drug kingpin in the hemisphere is hurtling toward the border at 200 mph in a specially outfitted car with a hostage and a fierce army of gang members. He is headed, it turns out, straight for Summerton Junction, where the whole of U.S. law enforcement will have their last opportunity to make a stand and intercept him before he slips across the border forever. At first reluctant to become involved, and then counted out because of the perceived ineptitude of his small town force, Owens ultimately accepts responsibility for one of the most daring face offs in cinema history".
The release date has been set for January 18, 2013, enough time for the filmmakers to deliver a spectacular piece of entertainment. The budget has been estimated at about $40M, not exactly a big budget, but more than enough for some decent action scenes. It's a big gamble, anyway, being both the Hollywood debut of a foreign filmmaker and the comeback of a former action star. Will it be the big cinematic event everyone is expecting it to be ? Or just another ambitious flop ? Time will tell.

This is the final episode in the first season of Kevin Tancharoen's "Mortal Kombat" web-series. The last two characters featured in the series are Cyrax and Sektor, two ninjas of the Lin Kuei, chosen to take part in a special program meant to turn them into cyborg fighting machines. I can understand why they took this much time to get the episode done. It is spectacular. The cyborgs are done in motion capture and CGI and the fight looks fantastic. Top notch visual effects. The acting and script are just as flat as in previous episodes, but that one last fight more than makes up for it.

Now, it's unclear whether or not there will be a second season to the series. The plans initially intended for the series to also become a big screen movie, but the modest fan enthusiasm may have sealed the fate of the Web Series. Kevin Tancharoen certainly wants to do more, but I'm not sure the bosses over at Warner are going to spend any more time and money on an experiment that can't turn itself into something profitable, seeing as they already cut season 1 down from ten episodes to nine. Below you can find all the episodes in the series.
