The box-office this last week has been revived somewhat by the presence of four major new releases : "Moneyball" a sports drama based on a true story and starring Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill, "Dolphin Tale" a family film about the friendship between a boy and a dolphin, "Abduction" a teenage spy thriller starring Taylor Lautner in his first ever lead role and "Killer Elite" a Jason Statham vehicle which also happens to star Robert De Niro and Clive Owen. Were any of these movies capable to take down last week's king at the box-office, "The Lion King (in 3D)" ? Read on to find out ?
The answer to the above question is NO. "The Lion King (in 3D)" is still undisputed at the top spot, earning $22M this week-end, which adds up to a total of $61.6M in 10 days, which is certainly a record for a re-release. The 3D ticket sales surely had something to do with that figure, but it's impressive nonetheless. The Brad Pitt starrer "Moneyball" managed a close second, with $20.6M over the same time-frame and "Dolphin Tale" landed an even closer third, with $20.2M. The only thing that really separates these two movies is that the fact-based sports drama's production costs are estimated at aprox. $50M, while the family flick's budget ran at about $35M, which means the latter is going to recover its investment a lot sooner.
Taylor Lautner's lead role debut, "Abduction" managed to open at #4, with a very poor $11M. While the movie cost only $35M, which is small change when compared to other studio actioners, it will probably have a very short shelf life, especially considering the very negative audience and critical reception. Similarly, the action thriller "Killer Elite" underperformed, opening fifth with $9.5M, despite boasting a dream cast that includes Jason Statham, Robert De Niro and Clive Owen.
