The week of August 19, 2011, was a week dominated by the loud publicity machine of two remakes ... well, actually a remake and a reboot, "Fright Night" and "Conan the Barbarian" respectively. "One Day", a bittersweet drama starring Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess, and "Spy Kids 4D" also opened this week. Did any of these movies break any box-office records ? Read on to find out.
In what would qualify as a surprise, "The Help", last week's number two movie at the box-office, rose above the competition and claimed first place with $20.5M over the week-end, a modest drop from the $25M it earned in its opening week-end. This surprising hold is also due in part to the weak performance of this week's opening movies. Not far behind, with $16M, is "Rise of the Planet of the Apes", which registered a steep decline since last week. It's quite possible that the sci-fi prequel will start taking even steeper falls from now on, after holding on at the top spot for two weeks in a row.
Of the four new opening movies, only "Spy Kids 4D" actually made decent money, although, its $12M opening week-end is the lowest in the series. "Conan the Barbarian" came in fourth, with a disappointing $10M. The 1982 version starring Arnold Schwarzenegger wasn't very successful either, opening with $9M, which adjusted for inflation, is still more than the 2011 version. The reboot is in very bad shape, considering its budget is estimated at around $90M. The "Fright Night" remake also failed to attract audiences, grossing only $8M in three days, but with production costs estimated at $30M, there's no cause to alarm, yet. The 1985 "Fright Night" opened with $6M, and went on to gross a total of $24M domestically. "One Day", the romantic drama starring Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess opened at #8 with $5M. Made on a budget of $15M, it should break even at the end of its domestic run.
