In Theaters : MACHINE GUN PREACHER (2011)

Official Synopsis : When ex-biker-gang member Sam Childers (Butler) makes the life-changing decision to go to East Africa to help repair homes destroyed by civil war, he is outraged by the unspeakable horrors faced by the region's vulnerable populace, especially the children. Ignoring the warnings of more experienced aide workers, Sam breaks ground for an orphanage where it's most needed-in the middle of territory controlled by the brutal Lord's Resistance Army (LRA), a renegade militia that forces youngsters to become soldiers before they even reach their teens. But for Sam, it is not enough to shelter the LRA's intended victims. Determined to save as many as possible, he leads armed missions deep into enemy territory to retrieve kidnapped children, restoring peace to their lives-and eventually his own.

Genre: Drama, Action

What to Expect : Intense action drama with a profound christian message, that unfortunately gets buried under the violence and jagged mix of moral, political and psychological issues. Despite it being a true story, it's a lot more fun if you don't take it too seriously. LIMITED RELEASE.

Critical Response : Negative. I was actually hoping this movie would fare better with critics, but in the end, most reviewers found it to be a tedious and shallow piece of inspirational fluff. Butler's performance has been receiving mixed reviews, some conceding that he has the necessary on-screen presence to portray the machine gun preacher, but also saying that he plays it more like a "shoot'em-up blood bath rather than an inspiring movie". All in all, the movie is being regarded as one big disappointment. Rated 16% on Rottentomatoes.com from 5 positive and 26 negative reviews.
