"It Was Just an Accident" ("Yek tasadef sadeh") is an Iran-France-Luxembourg co-produced thriller written and directed by Jafar Panahi. The cast includes Vahid Mobasseri, Mariam Afshari, Ebrahim Azizi, Hadis Pakbaten Majid Panahi, Mohamad Ali Elyasmehr, Delnaz Najafi, Afssaneh Najmabadi and Georges Hashemzadeh.

The film premiered at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival where it won the Palme d'Or. It opened in theaters in France on October 1, 2025. In the US it was released in select theaters on October 15th, and via streaming on December 16th.

SYNOPSIS

"An unassuming mechanic, Vahid, has a chance encounter with a man he suspects to be his former sadistic jailhouse captor, Eghbal. Panicked, Vahid kidnaps the man and rounds up a few of his fellow ex-prisoners to try and confirm the man's identity. As the bickering group drives around Tehran with the captive, they must confront how far to take matters with their presumed tormentor."
