"The Emoji Movie" is a new 3D CG animated film based on the emoji symbols, because Hollywood is creatively bankrupt and will make movies based on anything at this point.

Co-written and directed by Tony Leondis ("Igor", "Lilo & Stitch 2: Stitch Has a Glitch"), the film follows the adventures of an emoji (T.J. Miller), who suffers from a case of multiple-expressions, and sets out on a journey to become like every other emoji (single-expression).

The voice cast also includes James Corden, Anna Faris, Maya Rudolph, Steve Wright, Jennifer Coolidge, Patrick Stewart, Sofia Vergara, Rachael Ray and Christina Aguilera.

"The Emoji Movie" opened in theaters on July 28th, 2017, and received catastrophic reviews from critics who labelled it "unfunny" and "a waste of time". However, despite a Rotten Tomatoes score of 6% and an IMDb rating of 1.5, which is incredibly bad by any standards, the film went on to gross $24.5 million in its opening weekend, surpassing "Atomic Blonde" and placing second in the Top 10, behind "Dunkirk".

"This animated comedy takes place in Textopolis, a world inside a smartphone that's inhabited by various emojis. There, an emoji named Gene (voiced by T.J. Miller) is ashamed that he has multiple facial expressions while his colleagues only have one each, and he embarks on a quest to be like everyone else. James Corden, Anna Faris, Jennifer Coolidge, Patrick Stewart, and Maya Rudolph also lend their voices to this film from Sony Pictures Animation."
