Ubisoft's open-world RPG "Tom Clancy's The Division" has scored record-breaking sales, so it's no surprise that the video game company is looking to turn it into a movie. According to Variety, Jake Gyllenhaal is attached to star in the lead role and serve as producer. The studio is still looking for someone to write the adaptation.
The story is set in a post-pandemic New York as the player assumes the role of "an agent of the Strategic Homeland Division tasked with helping to rebuild the Division's operations in Manhattan, investigating the nature of the outbreak and combating criminal activity in its wake". Gyllenhaal previously starred in another Ubisoft video game adpatation that some would rather forget, namely, "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time". The movie went on to become the highest-grossing video game adaptation ever with $335 million, but flopped in the U.S., earning back only $90 million of its $200 million budget. "The Division" might be a solid chance for the actor to nab a major tentpole franchise to go along with some of his recent prestige projects. Gyllenhaal will next appear in the thriller "Nocturnal Animals" alongside Isla Fisher, Amy Adams and Armie Hammer, which opens in December.
Meanwhile, Ubisoft's "Assassin's Creed" movie is currently in post-production and will open in theaters on December 21st.
