Box-Office Report - Week of 15 July, 2011

Well, everyone probably saw this coming. "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2" leads the box-office this week. Not only that, it has also broken the records for best single day and week-end opening. Since no other big new releases opened this week and "Transformers: Dark of the Moon" is already losing traction, Harry and the gang had plenty of room to work with. Read on to find out the box-office results.

As I said, the last movie in the Harry Potter franchise raked in spectacular earnings, smashing the opening day record ($92M), then claiming the best opening week-end title, with a magnificent $169M, beating "The Dark Knight" who in 2008 managed to gross $151M in its opening week-end. Not bad for the young wizard. The other new release this week, Disney's "Winnie the Pooh", stood no chance at the box-office, claiming a meek $6M.

"Transformers: Dark of the Moon" registered a steep decline, probably due to their young audiences flocking to see "The Deathly Hallows Part 2". Still, Michael Bay's sci-fi epic earned a worldwide total of $760M in three weeks, which is pretty darn neat. Last week's "Horrible Bosses" and "Zookeeper" also dropped, but only slightly. All in all, the two comedies are doing well, considering who they're up against. "Horrible Bosses" looks to be headed for the $100M mark domestically, moving a lot faster than "Bad Teacher", the other R-rated comedy in the top 10, which is also doing well.

"Cars 2" is hitting the breaks, arriving at a domestic total of $165M total, which is a lot worse than the first movie's $244M, but still better than the other 3D animated flicks, like "Rango" ($120M), or "Rio" ($140M). However, Pixar's going to have to work a lot harder if they plan on making another sequel.  Tom Hanks' "Larry Crowne" is also a flop, barely recovering its $30M budget and looking to exit the top 10 before grossing $40M. "Super 8" is business as usual, gliding its way down after a decent domestic run. Woody Allen's "Midnight in Paris" is doing very well, with almost $42M earned, even after spending some time as a limited release.
