NEW ON DVD/BLU-RAY - May. 10, 2011

Justin Bieber: Never Say Never

Here's a movie that the world could do without. "Never Say Never" follows Bieber around mixing moments from his life with footage from his 2010 concert tour. The reason this is so pointless is because it's done so early in his life. They could have waited another 20 years, and if by then he was still a pop-culture phenomenon, a documentary would have been a no-brainer. Either way, fans will eat this up, while haters will probably buy it simply to burn it in public. This movie probably has the lowest IMDb.com rating I've ever seen, 1.2 out of 38,000 votes. That comes to show Bieber has both a loyal fan-base and a loyal hate-base.

No Strings Attached

Natalie Portman is taking a vacation from serious movies after winning the Oscar for "Black Swan". After the huge flop "Your Highness", she also starred in this rom-com, alongside Ashton Kutcher. Directed by Ivan Reitman ("Ghosbusters"), the movie deals with a couple who try to keep their relationship based on sex, but end up falling in love. Haven't we seen that before ? It's not all that bad, the movie has its moments, but in a sea of romantic comedies, it's a little faded and except for a great cast, it doesn't have much going for it.

Blue Valentine

This is no Valentine's Day movie. The depressing drama about a couple's struggle to deal with their issues, starring Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams (nominated for an Oscar for Best Actress in a Leading Role), is a smart and affecting movie. The acting is superb, both Gosling and Williams crafting genuine characters that reach out to us in unexpected ways. It's a rare piece of cinema, but it might not work for everyone. Available on DVD and Blu-Ray with a minimum amount of Special Features.

Some Like it Hot (Blu-Ray)

The 1959 classic comedy directed by Billy Wilder and starring Jack Lemmon, Tony Curtis and Marylin Monroe is now available on Blu-Ray. In Prohibition-era Chicago, two musicians witness a gangland murder. Their lives now threatened, they flee and join an all-woman band headed for Florida. In drag, of course. The movie is hilarious. The comic timing is perfect and Lemmon and Curtis make a great pair. Lemmon in particular is nothing short of spectacular in a rare unhinged performance. This is one piece of cinema that belongs in anyone's movie collection.
