Official Synopsis : Johnny Depp returns to his iconic role of Captain Jack Sparrow in an action-packed adventure. Crossing paths with the enigmatic Angelica (Penélope Cruz), he's not sure if it's love-or if she's a ruthless con artist who's using him to find the fabled Fountain of Youth. When she forces him aboard the "Queen Anne's Revenge," the ship of the legendary pirate Blackbeard (Ian McShane), Jack finds himself on an unexpected adventure in which he doesn't know whom to fear more: Blackbeard or Angelica, with whom he shares a mysterious past. -- (C) Disney
What to Expect : Don't expect the unexpected. It's the same old Pirates movie produced by Disney and Jerry Bruckheimer. It might work a little better because the new director, Rob Marshall ("Chicago", "Memoirs of a Geisha") provides a shorter and more comprehensible sequel. Depp and Cruz provide strong charismatic characters that help us get through the tired plot and action scenes.
Critical Response : Not so good. Only the first movie in the franchise received enthusiastic reviews. Still, critics acknowledged that "On Stranger Tides" provides a more accessible plot, that feels more like a Pirate story. Kyle Smith of the New York Post humorously remarks : "Cutlasses flash, music swells, mast sways, critic yawns." James Berardinelli of ReelViews misses the original franchise director Gore Verbinski, stating that he "handled the action with panache. Those movies thrummed with derring-do. This one sinks." On a positive note, Henry Fitzherbert of Daily Express is happy with the movie being a "A simpler, more coherent and amusing adventure that is the most fun in the series - and shortest - since the original." The movie is 35% fresh on "Rottentomatoes.com", with 55 positive reviews and 103 rotten ones.
