One of the important movies of 2010, that revelled in this year's Oscar spotlight, winning two awards out of seven nominations, "The Fighter", based on the true story of boxer "Irish" Micky Ward and his drug-addict brother Dicky, who fought their way to glory, is a typical crowd-pleasing sports drama wrapped around a more personal kind of family drama. Quite an unusual movie, the David O. Russel ("Three Kings") directed biopic is a rousing drama featuring an excellent ensemble cast. Christian Bale is a stand-out. For more about this movie, read my review on this blog. Available on Blu-Ray and DVD.
HEREAFTER
This Clint Eastwood-directed supernatural drama pretty much tanked at the box-office, but its tasteful handling of the weird plot and screenwriter Peter Morgan's blend of fiction and real-life events make for a deeply affecting experience. Not everyone's cup of tea, probably. "Hereafter" turns out to be more of a thought-provoking drama than you'd expect. Probably more famous for its spectacular opening sequence which depicts the catastrophic 2004 Tsunami that hit Thailand. A chilling scene, especially brutal today, considering what just happened in Japan. Nominated for Visual Effects Oscar. Available on Blu-Ray and DVD.
THE SWITCH
Just another Jennifer Aniston comedy. It's a shame really that the name Aniston is not a guarantee of a movie's quality, but rather an indication of how bad it is. "The Switch", overall, might be better than the average Aniston movie, but it's still a tired comedy with few laughs. Bateman is pretty good, though, but there's little either one of the leads could do with the lousy script. Director Josh Gordon worked miracles with "Blades of Glory"(2007), but his hands seem tied in this movie. Too bad. Available on DVD and Blu-Ray.
BATTLE OF LOS ANGELES
No, it's not the big sci-fi blockbuster released last week in theaters, but one of The Asylum's many "mockbusters". A crappy low-budget imitation. Normally I would avoid featuring this kind of movie on my blog, but I'm doing it for the sake of anyone going out to buy or rent a DVD this week. Take a good look at the cover art. Memorize the subtle difference in the title ("of" instead of ":"). Use this information to avoid this damn piece of junk at all cost. Unfortunately, it's available on DVD. These guys are too cheap for Blu-Ray. If you really must see it, for whatever reason, wait for it to debut on the Sci-Fi Channel.
