They lived and recorded at "Glamdale", a mini-mansion and former brothel located in the Jewel City, Glendale, CA. The unassuming record unfolds slowly, taking time to reveal itself. Like nearly everything TOPS does, multiple meanings overlap with the album's title referring to orgasm, but also to carrot chasing, gatekeeping, and the social contract. "Living in LA was living out a teenage fantasy," says vocalist-songwriter Jane Penny, "living with your band and practicing in the garage. It was also the first time we’ve ever had that much space to make music. Product Description: The long-awaited return of Brooklyn's Beach Fossils, Somersault showcases a band in bloom. Charting into new musical territory with a refined songwriting style, it's an album that captures flashes of life in New York grounded in personal experience. As the band's first release on Dustin Payseur's new label Bayonet Records, which he co-owns with wife Kate Garcia - the group made the most of their newfound independence, investing ample time in expanding its range both musically and lyrically. While Payseur handled the bulk of the songwriting duties in the past, Somersault is a true collaboration between the founding member and bandmates, Jack Doyle Smith and Tommy Davidson. Augmented with more complex instrumentation, including string arrangements, piano, harpsichord, flute, and sax, the new songs offer multi-layered pop guided by sharp, poignant, and honest lyrics. Orchestral pop gem "Saint Ivy" shines with plucked strings, buoyant basslines and a propulsive, wayward, guitar. "Tangerine", a driving, tightly wound melody, rushes forward and briefly leaves the ground due to the gossamer guest vocals of Slowdive's Rachel Goswell. The cloudy, wistful "Social Jetlag," bustling with samples of crowded streets, features the type of candid, off-the-cuff lyrics that make the entire effort immediately illuminating. Somersault evokes the laid-back mood of a warm, breezy city night, the air crackling with humidity and excitement. These songs pulse and pull, capturing a blend of promise and heartache. Product Description: In this new release, Brian Elias's large ensemble works are inspired by Greek Dance (Geranos), a 5th Century BC play by Sophocles (Electra Mourns). In contrast, the song cycles for solo voice (Meet me in the Green Glen) and solo voice and piano (Once did I breathe another's breath) are set to text by English poets. Bombay was Brian Eliass first home, until he was sent to school in England at the age of thirteen. By then he had already composed a fair amount- or rather improvised, as it was not until the need arose to make parts of school performances that Elias began properly writing his ideas down. In 1966 he entered the Royal College of Music, officially studying composition under Humphrey Searle and Bernard Stevens, though it was the experience of moonlighting with the composer Elizabeth Lutyens he found most stimulating. Under her influence, Elias produced his first pieces, which created a positive impression at their first hearing. Since then hes gone on to receive two British Composer Awards.
