The official trailer and poster for the Nina Simone biopic "Nina" have been released online. Written and directed by "The Brave One" scribe Cynthia Mort, the film stars Zoe Saldana as the American musician and civil rights activist and it follows her rise to fame and relationship with her manager Clifton Henderson (David Oyelowo). The cast also includes Ella Thomas and Mike Epps.
The film has already received a lot of criticism and even Simone's family refused to endorse the film. The controversy surrounds the casting of Zoe Saldana whose skin color is lighter than Simone's and required additional makeup to darken it, bringing back memories of what was once known as "blackface". Whether this scandal will affect the film remains to be seen.
"Nina" opens in theaters on April 22nd (limited release)
