Box-Office: TAKEN 3 Annihilates Competition with $40 Million Debut

box-office-taken-3

The final chapter in Bryan Mills' Set of Skills Saga, "Taken 3", made an impressive debut this weekend. The Liam Neeson starrer directed by Olivier Megaton opened with a solid $40.4 million, $9 million less than the opening weekend of "Taken 2", but a very good result considering the new installment had a $48 million budget. The sequel grossed an additional $51 million overseas.

Awards season contender "Selma" expanded to more theaters this week and it managed to take second place but at a considerable distance from the top spot. The Martin Luther King Jr. biopic grossed $11 million over the weekend, thus failing to meet the expectations of the studio.

New Wide Releases: "Taken 3", "Selma".

Biggest Drop : "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies" (-56%)

Smallest Drop : "The Imitation Game" (-1.9%)
