Box-Office: THE PURGE: ANARCHY Dominated By DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES

The sequel "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" still dominated the weekend at the box-office. The film grossed $36 million in the 3-day timeframe and managed to hold off some decent competition from three new wide releases. The first of these, "The Purge: Anarchy", another sequel, opened in second place with $28 million, a solid debut for the $9 million horror. This is another success for Blumhouse Productions, who have basically patented the micro-budget horror film. While this is still a step back from last year's "The Purge" which opened with $34 million, "Anarchy" has a somewhat better reception than the first film among both critics and moviegoers, which could translate into more attention, and maybe a higher overall gross.

In third place lands Disney's animated sequel "Planes: Fire and Rescue" which grossed $18 million in its first three days. This is less than the first installment's $22 million opening weekend, but the "Planes" franchise is essentially a small budget affair for Disney ($50 million budget), so it won't take long for the studio to earn back its money and turn a profit.

This week's disappointment is surely the R-rated comedy "Sex Tape" starring Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel, which grossed $15 million. It's a weak debut for the film, which was expected to earn at least $20 million, but it could be explained by the vast number of brutal critical reviews and low scores from moviegoers.

New Wide Releases: "The Purge: Anarchy", "Sex Tape", "Planes: Fire and Rescue".
