NEWS UPDATES: Emilia Clarke to Star in TERMINATOR Reboot, New SPIDER-MAN Spin-Off Projects, THE PURGE 2 Casts Lead and More

Emilia Clarke to Star as Sarah Connor in TERMINATOR Reboot

The role of Sarah Connor will be played by Emilia Clarke ("Game of Thrones" in the upcoming "Terminator" reboot. The film, possibly titled "Terminator: Genesis" is also in the process of casting the role of John Connor and Jason Clarke is currently in talks for the role. Judging from the age difference between the two, we can assume that the movie will once again feature the time-travel element. The film is directed by Alan Taylor ("Game of Thrones") and it is expected that franchise veteran Arnold Schwarzenegger will reprise the role of the killer cyborg. The reboot is part of a planned trilogy and it has also been reported that a TV series is in the works and it will tie into these movies:
"The TV series will follow a critical moment from the first Terminator film (1984) and, where the film’s story goes one way, the upcoming series will take the same moment in a completely different direction. As the rebooted film trilogy and the new TV series progress, the two narratives will intersect with each other in some surprising and dramatic ways."

New Spider-Man Spin-Off Projects in the Works

With "The Amazing Spider-Man" series building momentum, it's the perfect time for Sony to consider taking the franchise into new directions. As such, it has been announced that Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci, Jeff Pinkner, Ed Solomon and Drew Goddard will collaborate in developing several new projects within the "Spider-Man" franchise. These new projects will include a Venom spin-off movie directed by Kurtzman and written by Kurtzman, Orci and Solomon, and "The Sinister Six" which will focus on the franchise's villains. The latter will be written and directed by Drew Goddard ("The Cabin in the Woods", "World War Z"). Kurtzman, Orci, and Pinkner will also be writing the screenplay for "The Amazing Spider-Man 3", which enters production next fall and is expected to be released on June 10, 2016. The goal of this team effort is to provide a "a continuous tone and thread throughout the films".

THE PURGE 2 Casts Frank Grillo in the Lead Role

The sequel to this year's surprise hit thriller "The Purge" is moving forward. Frank Grillo ("Warrior", "The Grey") has been cast in the lead role. The film will once again feature a very small budget and writer/director James DeMonaco will return to write, direct and produce the sequel. The first film starred Ethan Hawke and Lena Headey and featured a dystopian twist on the home-invasion horror genre, but while box-office returns were impressive, the film received some harsh negative reviews from critics and audiences alike, so there is a chance that the sequel will not be quite as successful as the first film. Either way, since the production costs are very small, it's unlikely that Blumhouse Production will lose money on this one. "The Purge 2" is scheduled for release on June 20, 2014.

Samuel L. Jackson to Join David Yates' TARZAN

While the fate of Warner Bros' "Tarzan" was somewhat uncertain due to budget concerns, the film is now moving forward. The film is a big-screen adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs' series of novels and David Yates ("Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows") is set to direct. The most recent cast addition will be Samuel L. Jackson, who is in talks to star as "a Civil War veteran eager to redeem himself for his part in the massacre of Native Americans." Alexander Skarsgard has been cast as the titular hero and Christoph Waltz will star as the villain, "a military figure that crosses paths with the King of the Jungle." The role of Jane has not been definitely cast, but rumors say that Margot Robbie ("The Wolf of Wall Street") is being considered, while Emma Stone has passed on the part.

Ed Helms to Star in NAKED GUN Reboot

"The Hangover" star Ed Helms has been tapped to star in Paramount's reboot of the classic spoof "The Naked Gun". The original 1988 film, "The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!", was directed by David Zucker ("Airplane!") and starred Leslie Nielsen as an incompetent cop who has to foil an attempt to assassinate Queen Elizabeth II. The reboot's screenplay will be written by Thomas Lennon and Ben Garant ("Reno 911!", "Night at the Museum").
