These last couple of days have been all about mixed messages regarding the "Evil Dead" franchise. It all started when Evil Dead remake director Fede Alvarez sort of announced via Twitter that Sam Raimi will be directing "Army of Darkness 2". For the uninitiated, "Army of Darkness" was the third installment in Raimi's Evil Dead trilogy. This came as a confirmation of another announcement of sorts made by franchise star Bruce Campbell at the Wizard World Nashville Comic Con.
Here is Bruce Campbell's half-kidding, half-serious statement when asked about "Army of Darkness 2":
"The last one was twenty-two years ago. I just haven’t been racing to do it. Sam Raimi is just a little bit busy making the biggest movies in Hollywood. I used to be busy. Now I’m not. That’s why I’m here."A few days later, Fede Alvarez was asked about that sequel on Twitter and his response pointed towards Raimi taking over the project. Here is the Twitter exchange:
Ash would have to stop occasionally from chasing some deadite to catch his breath. Maybe we could do that, I guess. That would be exciting. Fight in a walker. That would be alright. Hit them with my cane. Fake them out, have a fake heart attack, distract a zombie. I like it.
Alright sir, the answer is yes."
Benjamin Thiele @thielebenjamin: "Hey @fedalvar will you be directing the Army Of Darkness 2 movie?"
Fede Alvarez @fedalvar: "Sam Raimi will!"
Everything gets stranger, though, when it comes to Alvarez's own "Evil Dead" sequel. Although initially the young director and co-writer Rodo Sayagues were tapped to develop a sequel for the remake, Sayagues spoke about the project yesterday and revealed that in fact both he and Alvarez had left the project many months ago:
"Look, I am sorry to tell you this but that movie won’t happen. Evil Dead 2 is not going to happen, at least not with us involved. We left that project many months ago because we preferred to put our energies on other things. I don’t know if the producers still have intentions of making it. But what I can tell you is that we are not part of that project."Today Fede Alvarez has responded via Twitter that we shouldn't believe everything we read online. The exact quote is: "Don't believe everything you read online..." Furthermore, the director told Bloody Disgusting that it was all a misunderstanding, and that "Rodo meant we’re not actually making Evil Dead 2 right now because the priority is Sam [Raimi's] Army of Darkness 2. But the plan of making a sequel to our Evil Dead is very much alive."
In conclusion, it seems that everything is all right and fans will get not one, but two sequels, one for each of the "Evil Dead" series, and Raimi's movie will be released first.
