The full trailer for "Man of Steel", Zack Snyder's Superman reboot, has been released, along with a series of new images featuring actors Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Russell Crowe, Diane Lane, Kevin Costner, Laurence Fishburne and Antje Traue. The trailer is quite lenghty with 3 minutes of story exposition and explosive action. We get some of the character's origin story, a quick look at the villan and a sample of the conflict Superman must face, although this being a "realistic" reboot, they probably won't call him Superman. There's a cryptic little "bleep" moment at the end of the trailer when Amy Adams is about to say "Superman". I don't really get that one, but it's nice that they've decided to address the issue of the big "S" on his chest.
Overall, I'm truly impressed with the size of this project and the ambition of reworking a superhero as popular as Superman. Bryan Singer ("X-Men") previously attempted a sequel in 2005 ("Superman Returns"), but while it was an honorable addition to the franchise, it never quite picked up the following Warner Bros. expected and his chosen Superman, Brandon Routh, wasn't much of a solid lead. So, the series was sent back to the drawing board once again. Now, Zack Snyder ("Watchmen", "300") and producer Christopher Nolan ("The Dark Knight" trilogy) are crafting a different take on the Superman origin story, which, they hope, will kickstart a new series. This will not be the Superman you remember from the 1970s-1980s. They say it's more realistic, but they say that about every reboot these days, so I don't care much for that. It's the newest trend to do a reboot like "The Dark Knight", even though they don't all turn out so well. Still, it is without a doubt one of the most ambitious projects of 2013 and I'm excited to see how it turns out. "Man of Steel" opens on June 14, 2013.
PS: This trailer also features Hans Zimmer's theme for "Man of Steel", or at least a portion of its musical score. Honestly, I'm not very impressed with it, but I'm willing to give it a chance in the context of the film and on album. As Zimmer himself stated in an interview, it's not easy starting from scratch after the memorable theme music written by John Williams and many viewers will have to remember that this is a reboot and all ties with the past Superman films have been severed, and that includes the music. I'll have to remember that as well, I suppose.
