NEWS UPDATE : Carrie Remake, Mel Gibson, Casting Updates and Release Dates

  • I personally feel like there's not enough Stephen King on the big screen these days. Studio chiefs seem to share my feelings because MGM and Screen Gems have been making quick progress with their planned remake of "Carrie". The movie is said to be a "more faithful" update of Brian De Palma's 1976 movie. This probably means it's not so much a remake but a re-adaptation of King's novel. Whatever it will turn out to be, the new version will star Chloe Moretz ("Let Me In") as Carrie. Furthermore, Jodie Foster and Julianne Moore have been approached to play Carrie's crazy mother. Kimberly Pierce ("Boys Don't Cry") will direct and the script is written by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa ("Big Love"). Scheduled for release on March 15, 2013. And for you Stephen King fans out there, it will please you to find out that King is currently developing a stage musical alongside John Mellencamp and T-Bone Burnett,  based on a true story of the death of two brothers and a young girl in the 1950s.

  • Warner Brothers decided to pass on Mel Gibson's new historical epic. The movie, set in 167 BCE Judea, told the story of a rebellion against the Selucid Empire led by the Jewish warrior Maccabee. The screenplay was penned by Joe Eszterhas ("Basic Instinct", "Showgirls") and was rejected by Warner Brothers because they felt it lacked feeling and a sense of triumph. This prompted Eszterhas to write Gibson a strong letter which lit up tabloids around the world. No word on what Mel Gibson will do next, so for now the project is pretty much dead.

  • Gary Ross will not direct "The Hunger Games" and this time it's a certainty. The director announced he will not continue the franchise. This puts Lionsgate in a tough spot as they need to scramble in search of a new director so that the sequel, "Catching Fire", can begin production as soon as possible in order to be ready for its November 22, 2013 release date.

  • Justin Timberlake and Ben Affleck will star in "Runner Runner", a movie about the world of online gambling. The drama will be directed by Brad Furman ("The Lincoln Lawyer") from a script by Brian Koppelman and David Levien ("Rounders"). Production is expected to begin this June.

  • "Contraband" director Baltasar Kormakur will direct a movie based on the graphic novel "2 Guns", starring Denzel Washington, Mark Wahlberg and Paula Patton. Here is the official synopsis : "A pulp story about cops and thieves and the men that are something in between. Trench has targeted a local bank to rob, and asked Steadman in on the job. Trench figures it’s a great way to score — considering it’s a cover for mob money. They’ll be thieves ripping off thieves. But what Steadman doesn’t know is that Trench is a DEA agent. And what Trench doesn’t know is that Steadman’s a Naval Intelligence officer. They’re both cops! And neither one knows that they’re not robbing the mob, they’ve been set up to steal $50 million from the CIA! A light-hearted crime romp in the vein of Ocean’s Thirteen and The Italian Job from comics legend, Steven Grant!"

  • The new Alfred Hitchcock biopic focusing on Hitchcocks relationship with his wife and the making of his classic thriller, "Psycho", has started filming and received a new title. It is now called : "Hitchcock". The movie is directed by Sacha Gervasi ( writer of "The Terminal" and "Henry's Crime") and written by John J. McLaughlin ("Black Swan") and Stephen Rebello (based on his own book). The cast assembled for this movie is awesome : Anthony Hopkins, Helen Mirren, Scarlett Johansson, Jessica Biel, Toni Collette, Danny Huston, Michael Stuhlbarg, Kurtwood Smith, Wallace Langham, Richard Portnow, and Michael Wincott.

  • Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson team up once more after their hit comedy "The Wedding Crashers". This time they will star in "The Internship", directed by Shawn Levy ("Real Steel", "Date Night"). According to the press release: "Vaughn and Wilson portray two old school salesmen who, finding themselves suddenly unemployed and passed-by in the digital world, try to reinvent themselves by becoming interns at a major tech company." Production begins this June.
