FLIGHT - A Robert Zemeckis Live-Action Drama (What We Know So Far)

Probably one of the hottest new productions currently in developement is Robert Zemeckis' "Flight". Even more surprising, this isn't another one of Zemeckis' motion-capture animated features, but a real drama, starring flesh and bone actors, his first since 2000, when two of his movies became box-office hits : "What Lies Beneath" and "Cast Away". The story, according to the official synopsis, follows "a commercial airline pilot who pulls off a heroic feat of flying in a damaged plane, saving 98 lives on a flight carrying 106 people. While the world begs to embrace him as a true American Hero, the everyman struggles with this label as he is forced to hold up to the scrutiny of an investigation that brings into question his behavior the night before the doomed flight." The movie stars Denzel Washington as the troubled pilot and James Badge Dale ("The Pacific") as a terminal cancer patient. Also starring, in undisclosed roles, are Melissa Leo ("Frozen River", "The Fighter"), Don Cheadle ("Hotel Rwanda"), John Goodman ("The Big Lebowski") and Bruce Greenwood ("Super 8", "Star Trek").

Production is scheduled to begin this month, so it's safe to say the casting process is pretty much complete. The script is penned by John Gatins, a writer who has worked on some rather average feel-good sports dramas like "Hard Ball", "Coach Carter", "Dreamer: Inspired by a True Story" and even a sci-fi spin on the sports genre, "Real Steel". The release date has yet to be announced, but it's expected to open sometime in 2012. Now all we have to do is wait for the first teaser trailer.
