"The Ward" is John Carpenter's return to big screen horror. His last movie was the 2001 violent sci-fi "Ghosts of Mars", but now he seems to be going for something a little more old-school. Amber Heard plays Kristen, an institutionalized young woman who sees dead people. Actually just one, but a really nasty one at that. Does the trailer make you feel like the movie is going to be full of cheap jump scares and cliched ghost action ? You just might be right, but if I know Carpenter, he's got a few tricks up his sleeve that we just can't see yet. Of course, I could be wrong, but his past movies have proven that he can take a simple premise and build it into something very satisfying on a primal level. The movie opens on July 8th in US theaters, but the movie is already available on DVD in Australia.
