Mary Surratt is the lone female charged as a co-conspirator in the assassination trial of Abraham Lincoln. As the whole nation turns against her, she is forced to rely on her reluctant lawyer to uncover the truth and save her life. "The Conspirator" is a dramatic period piece, which the marketing team decided to brand as "the true story you thought you knew". We all know that's a fancy way to describe fiction wrapped around actual facts. Robert Redford directs, so that should be some comfort that it's not just Oscar bait, and the cast is pretty spectacular. It could be interesting. Or not.
