Product Description: Coastal is a personal, behind-the-scenes documentary on Neil Young as he cruises the coast on his 2023 solo US tour. The film gives an intimate view of the maverick musician, as he navigates a return to the stage post-Covid. From his everyday observations on the bus to his candid banter with his audience. Coastal is a rare peek behind the curtain of this unguarded iconoclast. The film was shot and directed by Daryl Hannah.
Solo Neil is always a treat, whether it’s in-studio documents like Hitchhiker or live recordings dug out of the archives over the years (Live at Massey Hall 1971 is a nice place to start). Billed as a soundtrack to partner Daryl Hannah’s documentary of his 2023 tour, Coastal is notable for pulling out material Young doesn’t usually pull out, including a solo “Vampire Blues,” “I Am a Child,” and three songs from 1995’s Pearl Jam team-up Mirror Ball, an album even die-hards and contrarians probably put in the second tier. If there’s an organizing principle, it’s nature: what it gives us, what we take from it, what we can no longer fix whether we want to or not. Sobering thoughts, all rendered with the frank tenderness that makes him Neil Young. Sample banter: “What’s your favorite planet?”
