Disney's 2023 film "The Little Mermaid" is a remake of the 1989 animated film of the same name, which in turn was based on the 1837 fairy tale of the same name by Hans Christian Andersen. The remake is directed by Rob Marshall ("Chicago", "Memoirs of a Gheisha") from a script by David Magee ("Life of Pi", "Finding Neverland"), and it stars Halle Bailey, Jonah Hauer-King, Daveed Diggs, Awkwafina, Jacob Tremblay, Noma Dumezweni, Art Malik, Javier Bardem, and Melissa McCarthy. It opened in theaters on May 26, 2023.

"The youngest of King Triton's daughters, and the most defiant, Ariel longs to find out more about the world beyond the sea, and while visiting the surface, falls for the dashing Prince Eric. While mermaids are forbidden to interact with humans, Ariel must follow her heart. She makes a deal with the evil sea witch, Ursula, which gives her a chance to experience life on land, but ultimately places her life -- and her father's crown -- in jeopardy."
