The big box-office showdown this week will be between the Stephen King adaptation "Doctor Sleep" and the war epic "Midway".

Written and directed by "Gerald's Game" and "Oculus" director Mike Flanagan, the horror film "Doctor Sleep" is a sequel to "The Shining", one that apparently seeks to reconcile the differences between the novel and Kubrick's 1980 adaptation. Starring Ewan McGregor and Rebecca Ferguson, the film cost around $50 million to produce and is expected to gross as much as $18 million for the weekend, from 3,855 theaters, which is quite a step down from the early $27 million projections. It has already delivered $1.5 million from Thursday night previews.

Meanwhile, the blockbuster "Midway" is an expensive war film directed by Roland Emmerich ("Independence Day", "2012"). The film cost a reported $100 million to produce, and most of the budget was obtained by the director from various investors. Emmerich's passion project has become one of the most expensive indepdenent films ever made. And it's doing surprisingly well. Released just in time for the Nov. 11 Veterans Day holiday, the film has raked in a solid $925,000 from previews, and it looks like it could take the No. 1 spot at the box-office over "Doctor Sleep" with around $21 million from 3,242 theaters.

Also out in theaters this weekend is the holiday romantic comedy "Last Christmas" starring Emilia Clarke ("Game of Thrones") and Henry Golding ("Crazy Rich Asians"). Directed by Paul Feig ("Bridesmaids"), the film is expected to have a long life during the holiday season, but so far it's not looking great. It only managed to gross $575,000 from previews and could end up with less than $15 million from 3,448 theaters.

The last of the new wide releases is the comedy "Playing With Fire" which is expected to over-perform this weekend. Starring John Cena, Keegan-Michael Key, Brianna Hildebrand and John Leguizamo, the film will probably end up with $7-10 million from 3,300 theaters, against a $30 million budget.

Synopses, details, critical/audience reception, trailers, and more after the jump.

Official Synopsis

"Doctor Sleep" is the continuation of Danny Torrance's story 40 years after the terrifying events of Stephen King's The Shining. Still irrevocably scarred by the trauma he endured as a child at the Overlook, Dan Torrance has fought to find some semblance of peace. But that peace is shattered when he encounters Abra, a courageous teenager with her own powerful extrasensory gift, known as the "shine." Instinctively recognizing that Dan shares her power, Abra has sought him out, desperate for his help against the merciless Rose the Hat and her followers, The True Knot, who feed off the shine of innocents in their quest for immortality. Forming an unlikely alliance, Dan and Abra engage in a brutal life-or-death battle with Rose. Abra's innocence and fearless embrace of her shine compel Dan to call upon his own powers as never before-at once facing his fears and reawakening the ghosts of the past.
