The true-life stripper crime drama "Hustlers" starring Constance Wu, Jennifer Lopez and featuring an impressive supporting cast that also includes Cardi B, Julia Stiles and Lili Reinhart, is now in theaters and off to a solid start with $2.5 million from Thursday night previews, which should put it on track for a $25+ million debut from 3,250 theaters. It won't be enough, however, to knock "It" down from the top spot, as the horror film is expected to hold at #1 with a $37 million second weekend. "Hustlers" has received excellent reviews from critics, but a lukewarm "B-" grade from CinemaScore's opening night polls.
Another new wide release is Warner Bros' "The Goldfinch", an adaptation of Donna Tartt's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel that stars Ansel Elgort, Nicole Kidman, Luke Wilson and Sarah Paulson. Like "Hustlers", the film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, but the critical reception for the film has been generally negative. On the bright side, it looks like moviegoers are mostly liking the film, as CinemaScore reports a decent "B" grade from their polls. Pundits expect this one to debut with around $8 million from 2,542 theaters.
In other news, the dramedy "Brittany Runs a Marathon" starring Jillian Bell has expanded nationwide. And, in limited release, it's worth checking out Alejandro Landes' teen commandos drama "Monos", and the sci-fi thriller "Freaks" starring Emile Hirsch, Bruce Dern, Grace Park and Amanda Crew

MONOS
Official Synopsis
MONOS, Alejandro Landes' third feature, is a survivalist saga set on a remote mountain in Latin America. The film tracks a young group of soldiers and rebels -- bearing names like Rambo, Smurf, Bigfoot, Wolf and Boom-Boom -- who keep watch over an American hostage, Doctora (Julianne Nicholson). The teenage commandos perform military training exercises by day and indulge in youthful hedonism by night, an unconventional family bound together under a shadowy force know only as The Organization. After an ambush drives the squadron into the jungle, both the mission and the intricate bonds between the group begin to disintegrate. Order descends into chaos and within MONOS the strong begin to prey on the weak in this vivid, cautionary fever-dream.
